NASA reveals Webb space telescope’s first full-color images for the audiences globally

Image
NASA revealed billions of years of cosmic evolution with the inaugural batch of photos from the largest, most potent observatory launched into  space . The first high-resolution, full-color pictures from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), designed to peer further than ever before with better clarity to the dawn of the universe, were hailed by NASA as a milestone marking a new era of astronomical exploration. The James Webb Space Telescope, finely tuned after months spent remotely calibrating its instruments and aligning its mirrors, scientists will embark on a competitively selected agenda exploring the evolution of galaxies, atmospheres of distant exoplanets, the life cycle of stars, and moons of our solar system. Among a panel of experts who briefed reporters following the big reveal, Webb deputy project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland, Amber Straughn, said that all of them were blown away by the quality of images captured by the JWST. Twitter sues Elon Musk to complete his $44 billion acquisition

Image
Twitter Inc. sued billionaire Elon Musk for violating his $44 billion deal to purchase the microblogging platform. The firm asked a Delaware  court  to order the Tesla and SpaceX CEO to complete the merger. The complaint read Musk believed that he—unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law—was free to change his mind, trash the firm, destroy stockholder value, disrupt its operations, and walk away scot-free. The litigation sets in motion what promises to be one of the most important legal face-offs in Wall Street history, concerning one of the business world’s most colorful entrepreneurs in a case that will turn on staid contract language. On July 8, Musk said he was terminating the deal because Twitter violated the agreement by failing to answer to requests for information regarding fake or spam accounts on the platform, which is fundamental to its business performance. The lawsuit accused Elon Musk of a long list of violations of the merger agreement th...

NFT artists get first significant test since the global crypto collapse

Image
AS NFT art sales dwindle and only  handful of digital-art stars appear to be weathering the  crypto  storm. The days of NFTs of JPEGs selling for $69.3 million may be over for now. Still, a handful of leading digital artists held their own during a Christie’s charity sale that tested the lasting appeal of tokenized digital art amid a recent crash in cryptocurrency crash. Christie’s $1.6 million “Cartography of the Mind” sale exceeded the auction house’s own $1.5 million expectations, but none of its 27 NFT offerings were priced to sell for over $250,000. The auction comes amid a market meltdown for cryptocurrencies, many of which, like Ethereum and Bitcoin, have recently plummeted to less than half of their peak values. The Christie’s sale amounted to a who’s who of NFT artists, including Refik Anadol, Beeple, and Mad Dog Jones. They rose to global prominence amid last year’s jackpot for digital art, thanks to the advent of non-fungible tokens or NFTs and flush cry...

Fundraising woes cause Australia’s first online-only bank, Volt, to shut down

Image
Volt  Bank  Ltd, Australia’s first exclusively online bank to gain a banking license in the country, said it would shut down, return deposits and sell its mortgage book after failing to raise sufficient finances to fund the business. Volt’s collapse is a further blow to a business model that the Australian regulators and government promoted heavily after a 2018 investigation into misconduct in the finance sector led to a loosening of rules for new banking entrants. Rising interest rates and inflation this year have made it harder for online-only banks, called neobanks in Australia, to compete with established lenders, making fundraising much more difficult. Though the pandemic and COVID-19 restrictions triggered massive demand for home loans in Australia, the shift to working at home also prompted traditional banks to embark on a digital arms race, narrowing approval times for loans and eroding the competitive advantage of ne obanks. The firm had A$113 million ($78 mill...

Volkswagen nearing agreement to sell Electrify America stake to Siemens

Image
Volkswagen is close to selling minority stake in its US EV charge business to an arm of Siemens AG, a deal which would value the  network  at over $2 billion, according to sources. A stake sale in Volkswagen’s Electrify America LLC would generate additional financing as part of a strategy to more than double the number of EV charging stations that Electrify America operates across the US and parts of Canada to 1,800 by 2026. Electrify America, based in Reston, Virginia, also offers EV charging stations for use at home. According to sources, Germany-based Siemens would invest in its Siemens Financial Services subsidiary. The deal would complement Siemens’s existing operations in the EV charging sector. In August 2021, the technology and engineering firm said it plans to expand its manufacturing operations in the US to make over 1 million EV chargers for that market over the next four years. Bets on EV charging networks are supported by a doubling of EV  auto  s...

Germany increases gas conservation methods as Russia slows supply to Europe

Image
Germany will restart coal-fired power plants and offer incentives for companies to curb natural  gas  consumption, marking a new step in the economic war between Europe and Russia. Berlin unveiled the measures after Russia cut gas supplies to Europe last week as it pushed back against European sanctions and military support for Ukraine. The conservation measures are part of a broader strategy initiated by Germany after the invasion of Ukraine. Germany aims to reduce gas consumption and divert gas deliveries to storage facilities to ensure the nation has enough reserves to last through the winter. Russia’s gradual cutting of gas supplies has raised concerns of a potential fuel shortage if Europe goes into winter with incomplete reserves. It has also raised prices, putting additional pressure on economies already struggling with rising borrowing costs and high inflation and facing the prospect of a recession. The primary channel for Russian fuel to Europe, the Nord Stream...

Danone reduces product range as shoppers hesitate at high prices

Image
French  food  goliath Danone is cutting the variety of the products it sells to  retailers  to cut costs, meaning in the future, yogurt fans may miss out on the exact flavor or pot size they are used to. The makers of packaged food and supermarkets are struggling to combat rising prices, with products ranging from paper packaging to crude oil becoming more expensive due to a protracted pandemic-led shipping crunch and Russia’s war in Ukraine. Rising inflation also means shoppers are tightening their purses. On  Friday, supermarket firm Tesco warned Britons are buying less, shopping more often, and switching to cheaper, own-brand products to cope with the cost of living crisis. Earlier in 2022, some food stores were forced to take products off shelves as they could no longer afford to sell them. Those factors are prompting Danone to rethink how it sells its best-selling products, which range from Activia yogurt and Evian water. Danone’s global head of sale...

Ford recalls over 48,000 Mustang Mach-E EVs over battery safety defects

Image
Ford is recalling 48,924  electric  Mustang Mach-E SUVs and instructing dealers to stop delivering the model until potential safety defects are resolved. In a notice to its dealers, Ford said potentially affected  vehicles  include 2021 and 2022 Mach-Es manufactured from May 27, 2020, through May 24, 2022, at Ford’s Cuautitlan plant in Mexico. Said Deep, a Ford spokesperson, said that almost 49,000 of the roughly 100,000 Mach-Es produced during the period would be recalled. The defect involves a potential overheating of the EVs high voltage battery main contractors, an electrically controlled switch for a power circuit. The problem can lead to a malfunction that could cause the vehicle not to start or immediately lose propulsion power while in motion. The recall is notable as the carmakers continue to have problems launching new electric vehicles (EV). In recent years Ford has also experienced problematic vehicle launches, leading to high warranty and recall c...

Image
Bank  of America will roll out a new cash management tool to US-based clients to gain market share in the $300 billion cash management business for multi-national corporations. Transaction banking—processing employee payroll, paying suppliers, and collecting from customers—contributed roughly 8% of the bank’s total 2021 revenue, or $7.23 billion. The second-largest US bank said it was extending its virtual account management tool (VAM)—already available in Europe—to the United States, where the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated customers’ use of electronic payments. The tool helps firms manage multiple accounts by creating a virtual ledger, accessible online, that shows all their account balances and transactions and can model future cash flow. The tool can be opened and used within a day, whereas a bank account can take weeks to open. Liba Saiovici, head of global receivables in global transaction services for Bank of America said, firms need to because they often keep hundreds of...
